all i can say here is Jacobs ladder! Think about it. Serpent of the tree of life and Jacobs ladder! Why would they make this game for children?
I once made my own Snakes & Ladders game board, except that it has twice the number of snakes as ladders, and the snakes are all really long, and the ladders really short. A metaphore for life, I guess. I'm feeling much better now!
